Note to Principals & After School Coordinators
You may notice that KoKo NYC workshops look a little different than other classes for kids. This is intentional!
KoKo NYC facilitates process-based, not product-based, workshops. Kids in our workshops learn by experimenting rather than following instructions to make a pre-designed product. Our teaching artists encourage kids to think creatively to accomplish their goals and support kids as they build the confidence to take risks, think big, and learn from failure.
Environmental sustainability is a key focus of KoKo workshops and we use recycled or repurposed materials as building supplies to teach environmental awareness, as well as innovation. Kids in our workshops learn to create using whatever they have available in their environment and see “trash” as an opportunity to create something new.
By fostering a kid-led learning space with minimal direct instruction and unconventional materials, we believe kids have the opportunity to gain the greatest sense of pride and confidence in what they create while building crucial skills in problem-solving, abstract thinking, and ingenuity.
Please connect with our Arts Education Director, Christie Hodgkins, if you’d to bring KoKo programs to your school.
